| Maxwell Bates Maxwell Bates was born in Calgary in 1906 and died in Victoria in 1980. He apprenticed in his father’s architectural office in Calgary and designed Calgary’s St. Mary’s Cathedral. Bates lived in London, England from 1931 to 1939, where he was exposed to the influences of modern European art. He particularly identified with the French Impressionistic painters and German Expressionists. Bates suffered a servere stroke in 1961 that partially paralysed him and resulted in his move to Victoria. Bates exhibited his work widely in both Canada and around the world, and his work appears in most major Canadian collections. Richard L. White |
