Monotype
version 2.0
The original online version of the Monotype series was called Monoprint.
In the tradition of hand graphic art studios apprentice artist printmakers who are assigned the dirty and unpleasant task of cleaning the ink slabs scribble and paint drawings in the ink. Sometimes even master printers and their artists indulge themselves in a bit of fun but take serious impressions of the doodle art onto good paper.
I used two basic methods of making these ink slab monotypes. One method is to draw in the ink with thinner and brushes and stylus then place the paper in the ink to take an impression (monotypes 38-42). I also placed the paper on the ink and then drew on the back of it with various styluses (monotypes 1-38 excluding #10 which is a hybrid).
The monochrome monotypes where hung on the drying lines along with the lithographic editions and placed in the ink on subsequent days to create polychrome.
Each print was drawn or painted during the cleanup of lithographic ink in my studio. The monotypes were printed from the colours mixed for editions I printed between 1991 and 1993 (The Edge series).
The monotypes were taken on onto black Arches 11" x 15" (28 x 38 cm) 250 gram rag paper.
